WPSU Set to Visit Portage for the Our Town Series

WPSU is exploring the “gem of the mainline”—-Portage, PA for the 58th installment of the “Our Town” series. Community members from the Portage area are invited to attend a volunteer planning meeting to learn about the Our Town project. The meeting will be held Wednesday, October 6 at 7 p.m. at the Portage Area High School.  Anyone interested in the production is invited to attend.

At the meeting, local Portage residents will discuss which landmarks, events, and local stories the program should tell about their town. WPSU will answer questions about the project during the meeting and ask each volunteer to select a subject or event to videotape. The volunteers will later videotape the Portage footage with the help of WPSU-TV to create the documentary.
WPSU hopes to recruit 20 to 25 area residents with personal camcorders or still cameras. WPSU-TV provides one-hour of blank videotape to each volunteer in the format of his or her choice. There are no restrictions as to age or experience and no cost to participate, just a willingness to be part of the project.

The production date is set for Saturday, October 16. The program will be broadcast on Thursday, December 9 at 8 p.m. during the station’s on-air membership campaign.

As central Pennsylvania’s public television station serving a very large geographic area, the “Our Town” project was developed in an effort to involve the communities and their residents with WPSU-TV. The “Our Town” series is intended to treat viewers to the many personalities, perspectives, and possibilities that local towns have to offer.
“Our Town: Portage” will be the 58th production in the series. Previous programs have showcased many towns, including Altoona, Everett, Martinsburg, Northern Cambria, Jersey Shore, Bedford, Bellefonte, Bradford, Johnstown, Huntingdon, Indiana, DuBois, St. Marys, Lewistown, Somerset, Warren, Windber, and Olean, NY.

I am volunteering that night and I don’t live in your broadcast area.  What are my options to watch this program about my hometown?  Also, would like to watch Johnstown program too!

Portage was a GREAT place to grow up.  I often say that when I went to college, I didn’t learn anything more than I learned at PAHS.  Left Portage in 1966 but will always credit the town for my work ethic, my drive, and receiving a great education.  It does take a village to raise a child; and Portage did that so very well.  I’ll tune in, too.

my father’s family is from portage, our family had a long
history of public service in the area, my great grandfather and grandfather serving as burgess and fire chief.My granddad
and father worked in the Sonman mines and were active in the
relief effort after the 1940 disaster. I spent most of my youthful Sundays helping my dad tend my grandma’s garden. There are still a few Madigans in the area.I’ll be watching online.
