Sheffield to be Focus of the Next “Our Town” Production-Volunteers Needed

Posted by Charlie G on 07/13 at 11:33 AM

Public television station WPSU has announced that the Sheffield area will be featured in the station’s “Our Town” series. The “day-in-the-life” one-hour video scrapbook will focus on the people, places and happenings of Sheffield, PA, and the valley communities near it, as seen through the eyes of its residents. As part of the project a new web page has been created to highlight the Sheffield area.  The web address is http://wpsu.org/tv/ourtown/sheffield.

Community members from the Sheffield area are invited to attend a volunteer planning meeting to learn about the project. The meeting will be held at the Sheffield Fire Hall at 6:30 p.m. this Thursday, July 16th and anyone interested in the production is invited to attend.

At the meeting, local valley residents will discuss which landmarks, events and local stories the program should tell about the area. WPSU will answer questions about the project during the meeting and ask volunteers to brainstorm a list of subjects and events to videotape. The volunteers themselves will later videotape the Sheffield area footage with the help of WPSU-TV to create the documentary.

WPSU hopes to recruit 20 to 25 area residents with personal camcorders. WPSU-TV provides one-hour of blank videotape to each volunteer in the format of his or her choice. There are no restrictions as to age or experience and no cost to participate, just a willingness to be part of the project.

Anyone who is interested in being a videographer and/or storyteller for the program should contact WPSU producer, Charlie Gudeman, at 814-863-9790 or by e-mailing .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

The production date is set for Saturday, July 25th. The program will be broadcast in September during the station’s fall on-air membership campaign.

I just want to say thank you for doing this for this small town of Sheffield. I watch the show and wished for one to be done on this area. I do have a few family memebers that live out there. At one time I did. My dad and grandpa and greatgrandpa lived and worked in the area at one time. So I can’t wait till the time it airs. thanks again

Thanks for your comment. Every time we do an Our Town program I get more excited about living in rural PA. There are so many hidden treasures that only a few people know about. Whether it is the small towns, the interesting places to visit, or just the people you meet when you take the time to slow down a little bit, our area is amazing. We are having our planning meeting tomorrow night in Sheffield and the residence will get to decide what will be in the show. I will be bloging the results in the next few days.

Thanks again for your words of encouragement.

This is great. I grew up in sheffield all my life till i went to college in Sept 2000. Lived over on second mill street. I love being over on that side of town. The history In old mill town is great. I rember see old photos of mill town from the 1880s. My great great Aunt and Uncle live in a house right acrossed the street from were i grew up at. I rember going down to what use to be Highland Group and walk around the old pond that use to be for the wood mill there back in the 1800’s. Its a Great Old town that was a blast to grow up in. Thank you guys for doing a show on our town.
When will it be aired and what time?

Thanks for your comment.

We are having the planning meeting tonight. It will be interesting to see what the people in the Sheffield area want to show the rest of the world, what makes Sheffield, Sheffield.

I have to ask, what was the best thing about live in the Sheffield area and what was the worst thing.

Our Town Sheffield is scheduled to air on Thursday, September 10th at 8pm on WPSU. It will also be streamed live, on the internet. Let everybody know that they can see it by going to wpsu.org

Charlie, I missed the informative meeting in Sheffield, I didn’t know about it. Could you tell me how to get involved? Also he was probably, but my old history teacher is really interesting, and brought me to the edge of my seat many times….his name is Tom Curtin(he and his wife own the “Valley Voise”,a small Sheffied newspaper) and he is retired from teaching, but still drills wells. I think it would great if he was involved and did some narrating
