Noontime Concert Series at the HUB

Posted by Carly Mallenbaum on 02/07 at 10:52 PM

Every Friday of this month, the Student Programming Association will be sponsoring (with the help of your Student Activities Fees) noontime concerts.  The shows are FREE and on the first floor lounge of the HUB (above the sushi place).  The concert has a laid-back vibe: there are about 40 comfy chairs set up and the band is right in front of the seats (not on an elevated stage).  The music from the band plays throughout the HUB, so you can listen a bit before you commit to sitting upstairs.  I recommend you grab lunch, grab a friend, grab a chair and listen to some pretty decent live music.

Last week I went and saw the adorable Joanna Burns, a petite girl with a surprisingly soulful voice. She sounded a bit like Alicia Keys, playing everything from Whitney Houston covers to her original songs on piano and keyboard. She did an especially impressive rendition of “That’s What You Get” by Paramore. I stayed to listen to Burns for the whole hour she performed.  Here is one song she played that she wrote after she read the book (which is now a movie) The Lovely Bones: http://www.youtube.com/joannaburns#p/u/0/fssp8U4fINo

Here’s what you can expect for the rest of the month:

2/12: The Kalob Griffin Band—http://www.myspace.com/kalobgriffinband
A Rock/Bluegrass/Folk band from State College.  You can also can also catch them playing at Cafe 210 at 10:30pm on 2/10 and 2/26.  Some of their songs sound a bit like Wilco.

2/19: Dirty Superb—http://www.myspace.com/dirtysuperb
A Funk/Jam band from State College.  It’s a synth-guitar-drum trio that likes to improvise and “epitomizes the jamocratic ideal” according to their site.  Dirty Superb is inspired by artists including Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder.

2/26: The Weathered Road—http://www.myspace.com/theweatheredroad
An Americana/Folk/Fusion band from West Alexander, PA.  The band calls its sound “AmericCeltic Newgrass,” and features a fiddler and two guitarists (the whole band sings).  Sounds like a great way to kick off your State Patty’s Day celebrations!
