Tips for the Local Music Scene

So you went to the indie rock shows at Chronic Town, hit up every show at the State Theatre, and even went to the Bryce Jordan Center a few times. This semester has been packed with events of all sizes. Elf Power played a few blocks from the Disco Biscuits. The Goo Goo Dolls, Hanson, and Reel Big Fish came to campus.

But, with no recent announcements of events, it makes one wonder if State College will continue its climb as a music town? Yes, Bon Jovi is coming. But other than that, there are no winter shows to look forward to. Here are a few musicians I think would be perfect for State College.

Circa Survive
A venue like the HUB or Rec Hall would be perfect for this alternative rock band. They would attract a variety of fans, ranging form those who have listened to Saosin (the lead singers’ previous band) to his newer solo work. Circa Survive has played festivals like Bonnaroo and smaller venues like Philly’s Electric Factory. They can play such a range of places and would be perfect for a little wintertime mosh.

Daniel Tosh
He might not be a musician, but I feel like State College would miss out if they don’t book Tosh sometime soon. He’s the hottest comedian on television and far surpasses Dane Cook, or any other comedian that has come to Penn State. He could perform an intimate show at the State Theatre, which everyone would enjoy.

Kid Cudi
So the BJC has hosted rappers from B.o.B. an Jay-Z, but the newest rapper, Kid Cudi, has yet to play here. Even schools like Bloomsburg University already have him booked. Cudi’s raps have swept college campuses with his party-fueled lyrics and pro-marijuana raps. His newest album, Man on the Moon II, will exhibit his range as a performer with tracks featuring his producer and friend, Mr. Kanye West. Cudi is on the rise and the BJC needs to book him soon before he stops playing college campuses.

Blink-182
The news from UPAC and Movin’ On is that they have a budget of $250,000 to put on a spring concert for the student population. Who better to kick off spring than with one of the most nostalgic bands from our childhood? Since they have ended their reunion tour, Blink has been recording new songs and the Penn State community would be the perfect audience to debut their music. Everyone, both young and old, would love to hear “All the Small Things” and look back on the nineties.

These are just a few of the currently touring acts that could give very exciting performances. Whether you’re from SPA or just looking for what students may want to hear, please consider the aforementioned list.
