Such Gold Glitters in State College

Last Thursday, Asylum and the Songwriters Club organized another house show at La Casa Blanca. This one featured amps and a PA system; this house was literally rockin’.

The opener, Like Wild, played a melodic acoustic set, priming the audience for the night. Like Wild is the one-man acoustic band of musician and songwriter Patrick Hatt. His 30-minute set consisted of songs from his recently released EP, “The San Diego Sessions.”

Following Like Wild, Settle for Less took the floor. Their musical mayhem and debauchery with drums shook the window panes.

Settle for Less from New Jersey had a raw, young sound. They sounded like a post-hardcore band fresh out of high school. With musicians no older than 20, it was evident that the band has a lot of growing to do. But talking with singer Alex, he revealed that “the band is going to eventually break-up, but we’re going to keep playing for now.”

Settle for Less kicked things off with the organizer of the event, Drew Magid, jumping off the stairs into a group of people as they played their first song, “Alden Park.” Throughout the set, a few avid fans even were singing along and pushing each other around in the spirit of moshing.

After a visit from the police and the threat of a noise citation, the amps were turned down (momentarily) and the show continued. At this point Such Gold took the stage. By the time the band got its guitars tuned, the anxious house was packed with almost 75 people in attendance.

Such Gold put on a terrific show with both old and new material from their “Pedestals” and “Stand Tall EP.” They had many dedicated fans in the house, some sitting on the stairs watching from a distance and others listening in on the porch. Such Gold’s lead singer, Ben Kotin, even played a song from his previous band.

Kotin mentioned that their recent album, “Pedestal,” was leaked to many online services. To combat the leak, they released the album. The leaked version is an unfinished copy, so Such Gold put the official version up on iTunes shortly thereafter.

Overall, despite police interruption, the show was a success. Everyone who came out had a good time. No matter if they were dancing, moshing, or just checking out the budding artists, there was no doubt that Such Gold, Like Wild, and Settle for Less put on an entertaining show.
