Steve Moakler Show Review
Posted by Chelsea Sweithelm on 09/30 at 03:50 PM
Steve Moakler left fans of all ages wanting more of his music when he performed at the Penn State HUB-Robeson Center on Friday September 18th. Moakler and his two bandmates performed as part of the SPA noontime concert series, which features artists from around the country every Friday at noon on the first floor of the HUB. Moakler drew one of the largest crowds for any the shows in this series. There were students waiting an hour before the concert started, squeezing in at any possible space.
Moakler opened the show with the N’SYNC classic “Dirty Popâ€, but he put an acoustic twist on it, bringing more and more people over to watch his performance. Moakler is a story teller. He composes sweet melodies that tell of love, loss, and growing up. His songs grab you.
After the show I could not get any of his songs out of my head. One song that stood out was “Slow Mo,†which tells the story of a boy’s first love. During this song, Moakler got every person in the audience to sing the chorus with him. By the end of his performance, the crowd was cheering for an encore.
Moakler is originally from Pittsburgh, but moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue music and later a college degree. More recently, Moakler decided to put college on hold and give his dream of music a shot. Since then, he has been making his way down the east coast, on tour, living the dream. Although he does not have a record label yet, Moakler’s future looks bright. His music is reminiscent of Ryan Adams. They have a similar sound that stays with you long after you hear him play. Judging from the huge turnout from his show on Friday, you may be hearing much more about Steve Moakler in the years to come.
