Solange Releases Video for “Lovers In The Parking Lot”

On September 18th, Solange released the video for “Lovers In The Parking Lot” from her 2012 EP True. It’s been a while since I’ve heard a single from Solange, the last one being “Losing You” almost a year ago, and it’s good to hear her releasing more of her work.

The video showcases her signature quirky style: colorful clothing, big hair, and simple yet interesting settings. Supposedly, Solange came up with the concept for “Lovers.” She dances throughout an empty mall, possibly during the night, or maybe it’s the early hours of the morning. The end of the video shows her walking out into the bright sunlight, so that could imply she’s been dancing all night, but I’m not so sure. A security guard stands by watching her, as well as another mall worker who proceeds to dance with her. The choreography is reminiscent of Jody Watley‘s signature dance style during the 80s, as pointed out by many commenters on the Youtube video below.

Her ethereal voice combined with the somewhat minimalistic beats gives the song an old school feel while still remaining fresh and new. There’s a hint of sadness in her voice as she sings “maybe I need you but you just don’t want nothing at all.” She seems to be singing about a love interest who no longer seems interested, a situation many people can relate to. The strength in Solange’s musical skills is that she can create a totally new song, but continue to remain the same stylistically. She doesn’t dabble in too many different genres, running the risk of confusing the listeners. When we hear Solange, we know it’s Solange. “Lovers” successfully pulls this off.

I’m not a big Solange follower, but when do I hear her music, I’m always pleased with what I hear, even if it’s not my style. I think she has that affect on many music lovers. Check her out, and let me know what you think.
