New Voices on WPSU

Posted by Cynthia B on 08/31 at 07:27 AM

A recent survey by NPR’s “Local News Initiative” shows that public radio listeners want to hear local stories on their local stations.  Meanwhile , here at WPSU we’ve been charged with refocusing on the part of our mission that involves service to undergraduates.  The result is a new collaboration between WPSU-FM and broadcast journalism students at Penn State University Park.

Starting this fall, we’re working with CommRadio, the student webradio station, to collaborate in local news production.  Six students completed a WPSU training program last week, where they learned about public radio’s conventions for choosing and crafting stories.  Soon, you’ll be hearing fresh voices during our morning news.

I noticed the BBC was missing from today’s (Monday, Aug 31) early morning WPSU radio broadcast. It was replaced with the generic classical music overnight show. Yawn. That’s too bad, we could use the BBC’s international viewpoint a whole lot more than four more hours of the same classical music you play all day.
