Los Campesinos!/Cymbals Eat Guitars Replaced

Blame Eyjafjallajokull, that pesky volcano up in Iceland. Ash clouds resulting from its eruption a few days ago are hovering over the northern hemisphere, grounding flights all over Europe.

Unfortunately, Los Campesinos! and Cymbals Eat Guitars have re-scheduled much of their tour and cancelled the show at Penn State on Monday April 26th. (If you really want to see them, they’ll be playing in New York City and various other locations in the northeast in a few weeks.)

But volcanic activity won’t stop the music.

SOMA president Danny Michelson spent hours trying to save the show from its geologic antagonist yesterday, and he did it. The new co-headliners for the concert will be The Apples in stereo and Man Man.

The Apples in stereo hail from Denver, Colorado, but their sound is much warmer than their hometown. Since forming in 1992, the band has released seven studio albums, the most recent of which (Travellers in Space and Time) came out just a few days ago. The band has a unique psychedelic disco-pop sound, drawing partly from frontman Robert Schneider’s invention of a “non-pythagorean musical scale.” High layered vocals, spacey synth, and bright pop melodies have earned them comparisons to the Beatles, ELO, and their fellow Elephant 6 Collective colleagues Of Montreal.

Man Man brought their strange, eclectic, garbage-can banging act to the State Theatre last May. The Philadelphia-based band is a force unto itself, spinning non-stop sets in their signature matching white tennis outfits and war paint (see what I mean in this video). Their three studio albums, The Man in a Blue Turban with a Face (2004), Six Demon Bag (2006), and Rabbit Habits (2008), are journeys through a bizarre fantasy world, guided by frontman Honus Honus’ raspy vocals. Man Man’s intense live performances pervade your ears and body with a circus-like procession of instruments, its experimental tunes incorporating elements of jazz, art rock, gypsy, and punk cabaret styles.

Zak Sobel and the Kalob Griffin Band will still be opening the show. Come check out these local artists and enjoy an evening of exciting music!
