Local Food Notes for July 1

Posted by Jamie Oberdick on 07/01 at 08:00 AM

This week Elk Creek holds a benefit for Millheim Fire Co., Tait Farm Foods holds a gardening workshop, art and wine converge at Mt. Nittany Vineyard & Winery, and be sure to check out local farmers markets for your July 4th stuff…

- Elk Creek Cafe + Aleworks is sponsoring a community event benefiting the Millheim Fire Co. on July 3 starting at 5:00 p.m. The celebration includes local pork BBQ sandwiches from Cow-a-Hen farm, potato salad, slaw, and local hotdogs for children. This event is family friendly and has no entrance fee. The event will also feature The Tussey Mountain Moonshiners and other musicians celebrating the music of the great singer-songwriter John Prine.

- Tait Farm Foods is hosting a workshop “Maintaining Beauty in the Summer Garden with Chris Igo” on July 2 at 2:00 p.m. Igo is Tait Farm’s resident perennial guru, who will teach new and creative ways to keep natural beauty and blooms in the garden all summer long.

- Art lovers can head out to Mount Nittany Vineyard & Winery for “Wine & Watercolor,” featuring the work of James Cartey on Saturday, July 2 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Enjoy complimentary wine and cheese in their Vintner’s Loft as you view works from Cartey’s prolific collection. Exhibition art will be available for sale.

- And finally, don’t forget local food when planning your July 4th weekend events. Friday State College Farmers Market, North Atherton Farmers Market, Millheim Farmers Market, and Altoona Farmers Market all have great choices for that summer barbeque.
