Live Local Music

Less Than Jake to Headline Movin’ On

Posted by Charlee Redman on 04/14 at 11:59 AM

Saturday April 17th will be a day full of music (and hopefully sunshine). The 36th annual, absolutely free Movin’ On festival will be held on the HUB lawn starting at 11:30am.

The festival, hosted by the Association of Residence Hall Students, was born in 1974 as “Gentle Thursday.” The artists and genres have changed a bit since then, but the spirit abides: one last day before the semester ends spent lounging on the green grass, listening to music, and getting free stuff.

Ska-punk band and festival veterans Less Than Jake will headline Movin’ On, taking the Main Stage at 9:30pm (although they will supposedly have a “Meet and Greet” at 5pm in the HQ Tent). Less Than Jake has been throwing around their quirky upbeat brand of ska since 1992, when they appeared out of the Gainesville, FL music scene.

Eight full-length studio albums and 18 years of touring later, they’ve still got the same raw energy in their live shows. The band’s horn section, comprised of Buddy Schaub’s trombone and Peter “JR” Wasilewski’s saxophone, is what set their punk-influenced music apart from the crowd. Although the band has been moving away from the full-fledged ska feel of Losing Streak (1996) and Hello Rockview (1998), they retain a youthful exuberance that makes for a great live show.

The line-up for the festival features a variety of performers, including a few local artists. Swamp-troll rockers British Phil, who won the Movin’ On Battle of the Bands, will play, as will student bands The Hope Fallacy (pop-punk), West Gate (prog-rock/metal), Radio Empire (pop-rock), and So Long, Pluto (alt-folk).

Tallahassee’s pop-punk outfit Mayday Parade and Scranton-based ska band Skip Town Matty will perform on the Main Stage. Pennsylvania natives The Click Clack Boom and Maryland’s The Dangerous Summer (both alt-rock) complete the alternative lineup.

Movin’ On has often faced criticism for a tendency to book pop-rock groups at the expense of greater musical diversity. While there is a fairly obvious trend towards that vein of artists, two performers will add a little more flavor to the festival. Vince P. will throw down his electro-hop hop beats on the Side Stage in the early evening and James Kinney, a soulful R&B artist, will sing his sultry piano-based creations a little later.

Whatever your musical preferences may be, Movin’ On will serve something up for you. For photos, videos, and more info, check out the festival website.
