Karen’s Song of the Week: “Guilty Pleasure” by Cobra Starship

Posted by Karen Marchuska on 10/03 at 03:27 PM

With Cobra Starship invading the Bryce Jordan Center tonight as part of the truthLIVE Tour, this week’s song is one of the band’s first highly exposed singles: “Guilty Pleasure.” This track was the first single from their 2007 release ¡Viva la Cobra!, which was the first album that the band members actually wrote collectively as opposed to lead singer Gabe Saporta writing it all by himself. Since then, they’ve released two more albums that produced the Top 40 radio mainstays “Good Girls Go Bad,” “You Make Me Feel…,” and “Middle Finger.”

Though newer fans might not be familiar with “Guilty Pleasure,” it’s easily recognizable as one of the best dance songs in Cobra’s catalogue. With Saporta singing “And I came here to make you dance tonight/ I don’t care if I’m a guilty pleasure for you/ Shut up ‘cause we won’t stop,” along with the huge hooks, and layered vocals, it’s the perfect dance song. This song could be thrown into Top 40 rotation right now and not skip a beat. It would fit right in with today’s party-all-night tracks. He even throws in the line “if the world is ending, I’m throwing the party,” a whole five years before the big 2012/Mayan Apocolypse idea became popular.
