Gear Up for Go Go Gadjet, Wednesday Nights at Indigo

On Wednesday nights in State College no one throws a party better than Indigo. The party really starts at 10:00, but you better get out there early, because everyone, and I do mean everyone, is lining up to see Go Go Gadjet. And if you came to the party this past Wednesday, you know why.

“Indigogo” nights have become a staple in State College and for good reason. Though the band covers familiar pop songs - everything from Gotye to Train to Cali Swag District - you’ve never heard a cover band do it like Go Go Gadjet does it. Which is why the line leading up to Indigo often stretches past the many stores that lead up to it on West College Ave, and why it’s important to get downtown as soon as Indigo’s doors open.  The sooner you get in, the sooner you can make your way to the bar, order yourself a cup of “Go Go Gadjet Punch,” get yourself onto the dance floor and let Jeff, Tony, Nate, Chris and Mike do the rest.

Last Wednesday, the band started off in great form. The fact that it was the first week back from summer vacation combined with the fact that Go Go Gadjet was throwing the first party of the semester, made for a night that was more wild than usual. But when the opening beat of “Teach me How to Dougie” was played, the band received a unanimous cheer of approval from the crowd. There’s something about that song that puts everyone in the mood to party, and Go Go Gadjet’s version did exactly that. The dance floor became a hot spot at that moment, with flocks of girls fleeing their position at the bar to find a new position on the dance floor. As I was unsuccessfully attempting to “Dougie” with my friends, I was interrupted by a sudden chill running down my arm. Someone who had apparently been “Dougie-ing” too hard had spilled half a bottle of Coors Light on me, followed by an invitation to dance.

Obviously this was his idea of picking me up.

Fortunately, Go Go Gadjet saved the day by taking a break from their first set, rescuing me from the clutches of this guy’s invitation. Before Jeff leaves the stage along with his band mates, he raises his shot glass of some unidentified alcoholic beverage and affectionately announces to the crowd, “cheers, motherf******!”

After the band had time to recuperate and escape the sauna that Indigo had now become, they returned with Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call me Maybe.” If you haven’t heard the band play it live, you can watch it on YouTube (and see if you can resist the urge to dance). Once again the sea of people on the dance floor exploded and numerous dance circles began appearing.

The energy from the stage was infectious and no one on the dance floor was safe. If there’s one thing this band knows how to do it’s how to put on a performance and it’s one that will never let you down.

The second set went on for about an hour, with the band maintaining the energy in the room, playing one crowd pleaser after another. And while it’s easy for the crowd to identify every song the band performed Go Go Gadjet breathes new life into each and every song they cover, which creates an entirely different experience for the listener. Every song is transformed, experimented with, and unique to the original without being obscure.

And it leaves you hungry for more.

If you’ve never made it out to see the guys throw down at Indigo, take a break from those overpriced textbooks and make your way downtown. If you aren’t of the 21+ age range, you can skip the line and experience the band in the very comfort of your dorm room by visiting their Myspace page. After listening, you’ll immediately realize that the band has a sound like no other, and will soon be making their way onto the “party” playlist in your iPod, so you can take Go Go Gadjet wherever you go.

There’s no party like a Go Go Gadjet party. So get ready for a semester full of wild Wednesday nights and come out to Indigo. You’ll wonder why you’ve waited this long.
