Fridays with Spider Kelly at the Dark Horse
Posted by Michael Giannelli on 10/23 at 10:56 PM
On Friday nights at the Darkhorse Tavern you will find four guys onstage who promise to “satisfy your vast array of musical wants and needs.†This band is Spider Kelly.
Spider Kelly sound like a couple of old high school buddies who are as comfortable around each other as they are with the bar-going public. One of the best things about the band is that they create an atmosphere that is perfectly conducive to sitting around with friends and having some drinks. They are exactly what a bar band should be.
Armed with an accordion, kazoos and a pair of coke bottle glasses (along with your standard guitars, bass, and drums), the band features an off-kilter setup that goes well with their laid-back demeanors. They have fun playing together, and that reverberates back through the crowd, creating a genuinely distinctive experience.
The back and forth banter between the band and the crowd keeps the audience entertained even when the music isn’t playing.
Spider Kelly plays a few original songs, but for the most part they rely on covers that do plenty of justice to the originals. As their drummer Mike Jellen so eloquently put it, they “play the songs you forgot you loved.â€
In addition, the band takes requests in the form of pictographs. Just be prepared for lead vocalist Eric Bishop to share an improvised interpretation (All in good humor of course.)
• Spider Kelly plays every Friday night at the Darkhorse Tavern @ 10:30.
• 21 to enter and a $3 cover
