Free Concert - Los Campesinos + Cymbals Eat Guitars—-April 26th

The music of Los Campesinos is like warm weather - it feeds the itch to frolic and jump around a little in the sun, to walk down the street and smile. Yes, this sounds silly and childish. But Los Campesinos’ cheery back and forth vocal style and high energy pop songs emanate such a carefree happiness. Their bright guitars and brisk percussion aren’t immature, but exuberant.

Los Campesinos will play SOMA’s final show of the year with “You! Me! Dancing!”

Cymbals Eat Guitars, an indie rock band based in Staten Island (but whose drummer Matt Miller once attended Penn State), will play with Los Campesinos. The band formed in 2005 and has one studio album, Why There Are Mountains (2009). Nevertheless, they’ve gotten a great deal of attention lately for their experimental sound.

The tracks on Why There Are Mountains are constantly transforming, perpetually in movement between fairly straightforward rock and smatterings of lo-fi noise. There’s almost songs within songs, like the sudden piano and horn-driven interlude amid the static marking the beginning and end of “Indiana.” If you liked No Age at Arts Crawl last week, you’ll probably enjoy Cymbals Eat Guitars too (although No Age’s music is generally more noise-rock oriented and less melodic).

Opening the show will be local artists the Kalob Griffin Band and Zak Sobel. Sobel and his band jumped into the music scene recently, but their acoustic folk-rock is polished (despite perhaps a tendency towards sugary lyrics about young love). Their brand new EP For Jane is available on iTunes.

The Kalob Griffin Band, who frequently perform at downtown State College bars, play folk rock and bluesy alt-country. The songs on their EP Hideaways are enjoyable forays into western music, well-crafted instrumentals swinging behind Kalob Griffin’s distinctive twangy vocals.

Come on out for a night of exciting new (free) music, from State College, New York, and across the pond!
