Drinking Solutions at UPitt and A Grand Dame of the Sea Retires

Radio Feature: Alcohol Issues Series:  UPitt Addresses Student Drinking – Thurs. at 7:33am and 8:33am during Morning Edition – Penn State administrators have tried many strategies to try to address underage drinking and excessive drinking by students.  As part of our ongoing series on alcohol issues, we take a look at what’s working at other schools in Pennsylvania. Patty Satalia talks with the chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh about their award-winning program.

Radio Feature: Praise the Egg! – Friday at 7:33am and 8:33am during Morning Edition – State College resident Mary Gage raised chickens when she lived in Australia.  She was fascinated by their stories, and wrote a novel about them.  Now she’s collaborating with a composer from State College, Richard Biever, to make the story into a musical, called “Praise the Egg!”  The show will be performed at the State Theatre Saturday.

TV: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE – Monday, 9pm – “Victory in the Pacific” – A somber, introspective chronicle of the “embrace of death” the U.S. and Japan shared during the final year of World War II. Filmmaker Austin Hoyt focuses on the viciousness of the fighting.

TV: AMERICAN MASTERS – Wednesday, 9pm – “I.M. Pei: Building China Modern” – Architect I.M. Pei, who left China in the 1930s, returns to his family’s hometown of Suzhou to design a museum. The documentary features remarks from fellow architects and designers, scholars, local residents and Suzhou officials.

TV: QE2: THE LAST VOYAGE – Thursday, 9pm – The story of the ocean liner Queen Elizabeth 2, which sailed from 1969 until 2008. The world’s longest serving and most beloved cruise ship, the QE2, has come a long way since her humble beginnings as piles of steel and timber on ‘Yard Number 736’ in Scotland. Nearly 40 years after her maiden voyage, one of the most iconic liners in the world embarks on her final journey, as she glides gracefully towards retirement.

TV: THE ADVENTISTS – Sunday, 7pm – An interesting and revealing examination of Seventh-day Adventism. Included: its roots in 19th-century America; the story of Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, who ran a health-care facility based on Adventist principles.
