Backstreet Boys Release New Single, “In A World Like This”
Posted by Kayla Tooma on 06/24 at 10:05 AM
Backstreet’s Back (Alright)! With their eighth studio album, In A World Like This, coming out July 30th, the Backstreet Boys have released their single as the title track of the album. The song is absolutely Backstreet: harmonies, fun/cute lyrics, and so catchy it hurts. However, while sticking to their old aesthetics, they also incorporate elements of today’s pop like the dance beats that have wiggled their way into all current pop songs. While I enjoy the track, one drawback is that I feel like it sounds like it could easily be a One Direction song and perhaps not that slightly more mature boy band sound that they had.
Will “In A World Like This” measure up to some of their biggest hits like “Quit Playing Games with My Heart,” “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back),” “Larger Than Life,” or “I Want It That Way”? It could perhaps reach the top of the charts, but only because it kind of sounds like everything else in pop at the moment. Their 90’s sound, had a range of sounds while still keeping it pop. Back then, they incorporated elements of rock and R&B. At times it could be considered adult contemporary. I’m slightly worried that with their new material, they could be trying hard to mimic the sound of current pop, which has been done to death. And with an album cover like this that is so intense (the guys standing there in suits in such masculine stances with some kind of celestial object behind them) it does not exactly warrant the kind of sound we’re getting. But hopefully their new album will feature some of those awesome ballads, pop-rock hits that get you off your feet, and lots and lots more 5-part harmonies.
