Why isn’t Cassie Steele Making More Music?
Posted by Shamir Lee on 07/09 at 01:44 PM
I’m always waiting for the day when Cassie Steele will continue with her music career. Not that she was really well-known, but her music had potential and sounded so different from everything else TV stars-turned-musicians were doing.
If you know Steele, it’s probably from the hit Canadian TV show Degrassi: The Next Generation. She was my favorite character, solely because of season three’s episode “U Got The Look†(is that a Prince reference?), where Steele’s character, Manny Santos, goes from being only cute to being the girl every guy wants. I started looking up as much information as I could find about her and discovered she made music. Her 2005 debut album was rare. It was released back when YouTube was just making a name for itself, so I could only find one of her songs, “Bluebird.†The grunge/alternative style with the poetic lyrics was something I hadn’t really heard before (I was only 13 at the time).
Four years later, she released the album Destructo Doll, and I was entranced by the first single, “Mr. Colson.†Steele’s raspy vocals, singing words that seemed to be revealing a relationship with an older man who used her, really spoke to me. I liked almost every song on that album, but my favorite was, and still is, “Go Dark.†I would say this is her most poetic song off the whole album. Her live version, posted below, is my favorite.
Where is her music now? About a year ago, she did a live performance of a song called “Drink,†but it wasn’t associated with any album. I’m hoping that Steele doesn’t give up music. She’s really talented and has a lot to say, unlike many female musicians today who came from TV.

Additionally, she has created ads and flyers for One Heart, an organization fighting against child sexual abuse. She’s interested in looking at cats, doing ballet, exercising, and ending animal cruelty. In her free time, she enjoys watching horror movies, some of her favorites being Satoshi Kon’s Perfect Blue and the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ("sorry, I just really like the cinematography"). Music is a big part of her life, as she plays piano, a little bit of guitar, and used to play saxophone. Some of her favorite musicians are Jason Becker, BUCK-TICK, Megadeth, Aivi Tran, Missing Persons, Nina Hagen, Prince, and Koji Kondo.
