How Does Your Garden Grow?

Early this May we purchased a square raised container to plant peppers and tomatoes. We would much prefer to compost and till our own plot of land, but we live in a rental townhouse, and so our humble front porch garden will have to suffice this year.

Strawberry season is a short one. Or perhaps it’s no shorter than blueberry season or blackberry season, but because the strawberry is my favorite fruit, its season just can’t be long enough.

Radishes and Cucumbers with Shallot Dressing

Root vegetables aren’t just consumed during cold weather. The radish is a root vegetable that is available in Pennsylvania during the months of May, June, July, and September. It is during these warm months that the crop is at its sweetest.

There’s a New Market in State College

The North Atherton Street Farmer’s Market has been in the works for years and, finally, it is a reality. The market provides customers another location (in the Home Depot parking lot) and another day (every Saturday) to buy local foods.

Asparagus and peas are quintessential spring produce options in central Pennsylvania. Both are available at your local farmers market through June when corn and cucumbers will take their turns.

Food and Wine Pairing - Part 2

As promised in the last edition of our wine blog, I want to share with you additional considerations to match wine with food successfully. Remember that the key is “balance†so that neither the food nor the wine overpowers the other. Additional elements to consider are:
- Pair ‘chewy’ meat with tannic wines
- Pair salty foods with sweet or high-acid wines
- Pair fatty and oily food with high-acid wines
- Match or contrast flavor characteristics of the food and the wine

Harner Farm in State College

It started as a simple apple farm, but today Harner Farm has over 100 acres of apples, peaches, sweet corn, Christmas trees, and pumpkins. Watch the video and find out from Chris Harner, third generation farmer, why it is so important to buy local.
