Your Local Food Weekend for September 14-15

The Defibulators give you reason to kick up your heels Saturday night at the Elk Creek Cafe + Aleworks

A quiet local food weekend last Saturday and Sunday, but not so this weekend. Some very cool events to check out tomorrow and Sunday. On a bit different note, you can make your Penn State tailgate or party a local food event by offering up some local food like Hogs Galore bratwursts, drinks mixed with Tait Farm shrub, an apple pie made with Harner Farm apples, etc. Anyway, onto the scheduled events for this week…

Farm Discovery Tour of Morrison’s Cove, Williamsburg, PA, Saturday Sept. 14,  9:00 a.m.

A self-guided tour of six sites including Friends Farm, Clover Creek Cheese Cellar, Spring Farm Greenhouses, Piney Creek Greenhouse, I’Diehl Hunt, and Keystone Feed Mill in the beautiful Morrison’s Cove area, which has been home to all kinds of farms for centuries. Includes a whole bunch of kid’s activity, specials on local items for sale, door prizes, great food, and friendly people to answer all your questions. Plus, you can’t beat the price…free!

The Defibulators, Elk Creek Cafe + Aleworks, Millheim, Saturday Sept. 14, 8:00 p.m.

Carter-Family-Meets-Ramones! Dirty hillbilly barnburnin’ twang! Hee Haw on mescaline!! That’s what their poster fairly yells at us...and who are we to argue? This Brooklyn band invades Central PA with their music mixture of just about anything rural with post-punk. Sounds like a good night to enjoy a burger made with local beef at the Cafe plus a tasty brew, and then dance or po-go it off well into the Millheim night. Tickets can be had at the Elk Creek Cafe Web site.

Jammin’ Eggs: Jazz Brunch with the Rick Hirsch Trio, Penn Stater Hotel & Conference Center, State College, Sunday, Sept. 15, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Maybe after a night of hard-core twangy ravin’ stuff that The Defibulators throw at you, it may be time to tone it down a notch and enjoy some cool jazz and good food (some of it local) at Gardens Restaurant in the Penn Stater Hotel & Conference Center. Rick Hirsch provides the smooth music.

2013 Pennsylvania Forest Fest, Arboretum at Penn State, University Park, Saturday Sept. 15, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

We really do have some fantastic woodlands around here, and you can celebrate that fact Sunday the 2013 Pennsylvania Forest Fest. At this free event, you can check out some local music, meet some birds of prey from Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center, enjoy woodlot and birding walks, and more. It’s a day of exhibits, activities, music, and some food.

An Evening with Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion, Elk Creek Cafe + Aleworks, Millheim, Sunday, Sept. 15, 5:00 p.m.

End your weekend with the folk-rock duo Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion. If Sarah’s last name is familiar, that’s because she’s the daughter of Arlo Guthrie and granddaughter of Woody Guthrie. Sarah and Johnny are also frequent collaborators with the legendary folk-rock band Wilco. You can see them for just $15, so get your tickets here.
