Pennsylvania Inside Out: Stadiums as Cathedrals
Pennsylvania Inside Out: Stadiums as Cathedrals
In recent years, construction of new multi-million dollar sports facilities has grown rapidly. In North America alone, there are 120 major professional sports franchises. Ninety of these teams are playing in new stadiums, or are planning to construct new facilities, and in the vast majority of cases, public money--a lot of it--is paying for the projects. Penn State's Robert Trumpbour has analyzed American sports stadiums and arenas, looking specifically at the cultural attitudes that transcend sports and society. We talked with Trumpbour about his analysis and his new book, "The New Cathedrals: Politics and Media in the History of Stadium Construction."
