Researchers at Penn State recently received a three-year, $3.5 million grant, to look at how to genetically engineer plants so they can detect harmful chemical or biological agents and warn us. Can plants act like the canary in the mineshaft? Jack Schultz is a chemical ecologist and professor of entomology in Penn State 's College of Agricultural Sciences.
