Take Note: Need for the Bike

Reading the English translation of Need for the Bike by French writer Paul Fournel was like bicycling itself--pure pleasure.  The book captures the sound, smell, feel and language of cycling.  In compact and lyrical prose, Fournel conveys the experience of cycling--in the mountains, the city, in groups, alone, suffering, exhausted, exhilarated. Allan Stoekl, a Penn State professor of French and comparative literature, translated Fournel's book, Need for the Bike, and wrote the introduction.  The book was republished with permission from the University of Nebraska Press.
