Take Note: Natural Disasters

Can Hollywood B-movie clips teach non-science college majors about science? Kevin Furlong, Ph.D., Penn State professor of Geosciences, uses natural disasters, such as volcanoes, earthquakes and floods, as they're portrayed in B-movies, to help students develop critical thinking skills and to enhance their scientific literacy.  Furlong has received numerous teaching awards, including the Wilson and Mitchell teaching award from Penn State's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. His course, Earth 101, is one of the most popular classes offered at University Park.
