To the Best of My Knowledge: Bridge Safety

The horrifying images of Minnesota's bridge collapse last summer raise a frightening question: Could it happen in Pennsylvania? Pennsylvania has more than 25,000 state-owned bridges. Nearly six thousand of them are categorized as "structurally deficient," or in need of repair. Guests are ANDREA SCHOKKER, Ph.D., Henderson Professor of Civil Engineering and director of the Transportation Infrastructure Program at The Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute at Penn State and LINDA FIGG, president and CEO of Figg Engineering Group, lead designer of the winning bridge plan to replace the I-35W bridge that collapsed last summer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her firm also designed the new Susquehanna Turnpike bridge in Harrisburg and the upcoming Allegheny River Bridge in Pittsburgh.
